How To Remove A Copyright Note On WordPress Footer
You are here because you want to learn how to remove a copyright note on the WordPress footer. Let me guess, you are using a free WordPress template but don’t want that footer credit note like copyright, website name and powered by to show. It’s either you want to change the footer note and add your own or you want to remove it so that people will know that you are using a free or freemium theme.
I was once like you too until I found a solution that helped me to edit a copyright footer note. There are three (3) ways you can use to edit the copyright.
Three (3) Ways to Remove A Copyright Note On WordPress Footer
WordPress Theme Options
The first place to check and edit the copyright note on WordPress is the theme option. All the paid themes provide the option to edit the footer note while some free themes allow the removal of the copyright note.
To remove the copyright note on the footer through the theme option, follow the steps below.
- Login to Your WordPress Admin www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin and enter your login details (username/email and password).
- In the dashboard, find and click on the Appearance tab.
- When you log into your dashboard, find and click on the “Appearance tab”. The Appearance is in the left-hand menu.
- Click on customize
- Click on the footer section
- When the footer opens, click on the copyright.
- If you can see this section that means your theme allows copyright note modification. You can delete or edit the footer note to suit your desired copyright information.
- Save and check your website to confirm the change.
Editing The Footer.php
You need to have basic programming experience to be able to edit the copyright note using this option. If you have experience in HTML and CSS, you can use this option.
The steps below will guide you to edit a footer copyright note.
- Login to Your WordPress Admin www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin and enter your login details (username/email and password).
- When you log into your dashboard, find and click on the “Appearance tab”. The Appearance is in the left-hand menu.
- Hover over the Appearance tab, and the menus under the Appearance will drop. Click on “Theme File Editor” find and click on the Footer.php File (this file contains the code for the footer section of your website)
- Search for the copyright code. The code looks like “<footer>© All Rights Reserved or copyright Year Your Website Name </footer>” or something close to this.
- If you can see this section that means your theme allows copyright note modification. You can delete or edit the footer note to suit your desired copyright information.
- Update the changes and check your website to confirm the change.
Editing with a plugin
This option is easy and straightforward. If your theme does not have an option for editing copyright footer notes and does not also allow footer.php edit, this plugin option will help you.
Follow the steps below to edit your footer copyright note.
- Login to Your WordPress Admin www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin and enter your login details (username/email and password)
- When you log into your dashboard, find and click on “plugin”. The plugin is in the left-hand menu.
- Open the plugin, and click on ADD NEW.
- Search for “Visual Footer Credit Remover” install and activate the plugin
- Return to the dashboard. Click on the tools menu. When the tools open, click on the installed “Visual Footer Credit Remover”. The plugin will open your website.
- Scroll down to the footer, and click on the copyright note. A text box will open containing the copyright text. Edit the copyright note as you desire.
- Click on the save.
- Check your website for the updated copyright footer note
